The 'doorway' to successful rescues

CATAWBA ISLAND — Earlier this year, the Catawba Island Volunteer Fireman's Association purchased "an extremely versatile forcible entry prop," according to a department statement. What's the importance? It allows "our members to train to force an array of doors from inward and outward opening to standard residential and high-security commercial doors," the statement read. During a recent shift, firefighters at the local station learned how to pursue "an initial forcible entry" on standard inward and outward opening doors. "This prop will be used in an in-depth series of classes over the next year to give our crew experience to quickly and efficiently gain entry to any door that they are presented with in an emergency," the statement read. "Totaling well over $11,000, this purchase was made using donations from the general public and the proceeds from our annual chicken barbecue," it continued. "We are grateful for the generosity of our donors. You make a significant difference, enabling us to volunteer and serve our community. Thank you."
