Get ready to rhyme, shine

VERMILION — If you have a way with words, a flair for the dramatic or just love the rhythm of live poetry, mark your calendar: Vermilion is about to get lyrical. On Thursday, July 24, the Vermilion Poetry Society will host its inaugural Poetry Slam Contest at the Vermilion Boat Club, 5416 Liberty Ave. (U.S. 6). Registration runs from 6:15-6:45 p.m. The contest begins at 7 p.m. and will wrap up around 9 p.m. This isn't your typical poetry reading. Expect powerful performances, competitive creativity and an audience that doesn't just listen but helps choose the winner. Each poet should bring at least three original poems, each no longer than 3 minutes with a 20-second grace period. No props or music are allowed. A panel of three judges will score performances on a 0-to-10 scale, and audience votes will help determine the outcome. Admission is free, and all are welcome. Whether you're stepping up to the mic or coming just to listen, you'll find great energy, strong voices and a supportive crowd. A cash bar will be available along with free chips and pretzels.
