Only 1 area basketball school changing divisions

COLUMBUS — Monroeville's boys basketball team is the only area program that will play in a new division in the 2025-26 season. Monroeville's boys will move from Division VI to Division VII this coming season. The Eagles will be the ninth-largest program in D-VII with an adjusted boys enrollment of 95. All other area boys and girls teams will play in the same divisions in the state's second year using seven divisions. The OHSAA announced winter sports divisional breakdowns Monday. The only new assignments were in boys and girls basketball because they are the lone winter sports that are subject to the OHSAA's competitive balance process, which can change adjusted enrollments when players transfer. Basketball divisions are recalculated every season and only a handful of programs in each division were moved up or down. Sandusky and Norwalk will again play in Division III (boys and girls). Sandusky's boys have an adjusted enrollment of 375 — the highest in the area among boys and girls teams. Five area boys teams will again compete in Division IV: Bellevue, Clyde, Perkins, Port Clinton and Vermilion. Edison, Huron and Margaretta boys are in Division V while Danbury, St. Mary Central Catholic, Monroeville and St. Paul are in Division VII. Danbury has the area's smallest boys adjusted enrollment (49) while SMCC has the smallest girls adjusted enrollment (47). Among area girls, Bellevue, Clyde, Perkins and Vermilion will play in Division IV. Girls teams from Edison, Huron and Port Clinton will play in Division V. Margaretta and Monroeville will have girls teams in Division VI while Danbury, SMCC and St. Paul are in Division VII. Most schools statewide will play in the same divisions as last season, but there are some notable exceptions. Richmond Heights' boys will move from Division V to Division VI. Purcell Marian's girls team — which won its fourth straight state championship last season — will move from Division III to Division IV. Also, Warrensville Heights' girls — which lost to Division IV state champion Bellevue in a regional final — will move up to Division III. Gilmour Academy's girls will move from D-III to D-IV. Divisional breakdowns remain the same next season for swimming, bowling and boys wrestling, which do not utilize competitive balance and will be in the second year of the two-year base enrollment cycle. Girls wrestling has one division.
