Missing cemetery statue found

NORWALK — Local authorities on Monday publicized how they found and retrieved a statue reported missing from a Norwalk-area cemetery earlier this month. "We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Huron County Sheriff's Office for their outstanding assistance in helping our department locate and recover the stolen St. Michael statue," according to a Monday posting on Norwalk police's Facebook page. "Their dedication, teamwork and swift action played a key role in bringing this case to a successful resolution," the post read. "We truly appreciate the support and collaboration between our departments. It's a great reminder of what we can accomplish when we work together." What happened? In early June, Norwalk resident Janelle Dymond reported how someone stole the St. Michael the Archangel — known as a warrior and protector against evil — placed at Carl Myers' burial plot. "It was a gift to put at my dad's, Carl Myers', grave when he passed in 2018 from his brother, Tom Myers, who has also since passed," Dymond said. "My dad and his brother, Tom, had a wonderful, brotherly bond, and having that statue always reminded me of the love they shared each time I would visit." The statue stands between 3 feet and 4 feet tall. Made of resin, it weighs anywhere from 100 pounds to 150 pounds. Upon realizing its disappearance, Dymond contacted cemetery officials and informed them of what happened. They didn't know about the theft, claiming that not much crime happens on cemetery grounds. Fast-forward to Monday, and after Norwalk police's posting, Dymond spoke with a Huron County sheriff's detective, who explained how they found the statue. On an unrelated matter, the Huron County Sheriff's Office processed a warrant out for a Greenwich man on drug-related crimes. And, as a mere coincidence, when they went to serve him with his warrant on Monday, authorities discovered the St. Michael statue placed on his front porch. Because of this, authorities are also now processing theft charges for the man. Dymond thanked the many community members who shared the missing statue post from earlier this month and helped in the effort to retrive something deemed very important to her family. The statue will soon be returned to the cemetery at her father's burial plot. "I'm so happy to have it back," Dymond said.
