Community feedback drives plan

HURON TWP. — Erie MetroParks officials recently released the district's strategic plan for the next five years, now through 2030, which was "driven by community feedback," according to an organizational statement. Incorporating various collection methods in 2024, officials devised a guiding document "outlining initiatives that enhance visibility and access to the Sandusky Bay, improve park trails and expand programs for underserved populations," the statement read. In 2024, "The public passed Erie MetroParks renewal levy by almost 72%," park executive director Melissa Price said. "After the grand opening of the Roger Johnson Nature Center, the staff and I felt it was the perfect time to ask Erie County stakeholders what they would like to see in the next five years." Thereafter, Erie MetroParks' five-year plan was formed after compiling public comments, reviewing survey data and hosting staff planning sessions. Additional strategies include providing responsible fiscal management, establishing mechanisms for ongoing community feedback and conserving Erie County's natural resources for future generations. More specifically, Price pointed out three specific improvements those providing input seek from park officials: • "Our community would like better access to the back bay in the form of trails and non-motorized boat access." • "Our community would like to see year-round restroom facilities in our most popular parks." • "Programs were rated good to excellent in all categories, yet there is a demand for more programming in all categories. Our staff must leverage our partnerships with other like-minded agencies to meet an increased demand for programs and expand opportunities for passive programming that can be done independently, (such as) self-guided opportunities." Price then gave an update to one of Erie MetroParks' most popular attractions: "We are also planning to make Osborn MetroPark's perimeter path paved for non-motorized wheelchairs/(handicap) accessibility," Price said. "The community is asking for accessible trails for strollers and wheelchairs, and many of our parks have conservation easements that restrict paved trails," Price added. "However, Osborn MetroPark can be paved — and with our proximity to the nursing home, we hope to provide additional outdoor space for families to connect with grandparents and parents residing in The Meadows."
