Dept. stresses need for nurses

SANDUSKY — As the national nursing shortage continues, the Erie County Health Department is sounding the alarm on the urgent need for nurses in behavioral health settings, particularly in addiction and mental health recovery. Two of the department's most critical programs — the detox unit, a 24/7 withdrawal management facility, and the Kaptur-Rogowski House, a 24/7 short-term crisis stabilization center — rely on skilled, compassionate nurses to care for individuals during some of the most vulnerable moments in their lives. "Nurses in these roles aren't just administering care—they're saving lives," said Stephanie Salyer, a registered nurse and the department's chief mental and behavioral health officer. "We need more professionals ready to step into this mission-driven work." Behavioral health nurses are vital Unlike traditional hospital settings, behavioral health nurses provide care for individuals experiencing emotional, psychological or substance-related crises. This work demands a unique mix of medical knowledge, emotional intelligence and calmness while under pressure. "These aren't easy jobs, but they are essential," county health commissioner Pete Schade said. "Our nurses in detox and crisis stabilization are the frontline of healing for many people in our community. We need to support and grow this workforce: not just for our facilities, but for the public good." Pathways to a nursing career Whether you're graduating from high school or seeking a new path, now is the time to explore a career in nursing: • Licensed practical nurses complete a 12- to 18-month program to receive licensure. • Registered nurses earn an associate's or bachelor's degree to receive licensure.
