Wittmer, Hermes named to Division V all-state baseball team

Two standouts who anchored an impressive season by the Edison baseball team have been recognized among the top players in the state. Edison junior outfielder and pitcher Bryson Wittmer was selected as the Division V Player of the Year as part of the Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association's All-Ohio teams released earlier this week. Wittmer was joined on the first team by his senior teammate and ace pitcher Abe Hermes. Players named to the All-Ohio team must be nominated by coaches who are members of the OHSBCA. Twenty poll-voting coaches in each of seven divisions choose the teams. A University of Louisville commit since January 2023, Wittmer batted leadoff for the Chargers this past spring. He was 40 for 90 (.444) at the plate with two doubles, two triples and six home runs. Wittmer had 23 RBI and scored 40 runs in in 27 games. He also walked 17 times and stole 16 bases. When he wasn't playing center field, Wittmer made six starts on the mound. He finished 4-1 with a 2.55 earned run average. Wittmer allowed 13 earned runs on eight hits with 83 strikeouts and 35 walks in 35 2/3 innings of work. Meanwhile, Hermes led Edison on the mound this season. The Sandusky Bay Conference Bay Division's Most Outstanding Performer, Hermes was 10-1 with a 0.98 ERA this season. An Ohio University recruit for wrestling, Hermes appeared in 13 games with eight starts. He threw six complete games, including four shutouts, and also recorded one save. Hermes allowed 24 runs (10 earned) on 45 hits with 123 strikeouts and 22 walks in 71 1/3 innings. Edison finished 23-4 overall and 10-0 in the Bay Division this season. The Chargers won league and sectional titles, and finished with a No. 3 ranking in the final state coaches poll. In Division IV, Bellevue's Ike Brown was a second team pick at shortstop. Brown batted .412 in his sophomore season. The Division IV Player of the Year is Ashton Martin from Jonathan Alder. Gibsonburg's Nolan Hoover was an honorable mention selection in Division VI as a utility player. Tiffin Calvert's Matt Coleman was named co-Coach of the Year in Division VII. Calvert junior catcher Connor Moyer senior second baseman Blake Coleman (.383) were named to the D-VII first team. Moyer batted .372 with four home runs and 35 RBI for the Senecas, who played in a state semifinal Thursday. Calvert's Logan Ritzler and A.J. Shoemaker were on the honorable mention list.
