4-H group for the veterans

Editor's note: Carlie Wiedenheft serves as a news reporter for the Happy-Go-Lucky 4-H Club. A part of the Erie County 4-H youth development network, the Happy-Go-Lucky 4-H Club organization teaches leadership, citizenship and life skills. Wiedenheft recently received an initiative group members took on ahead of Memorial Day. MARGARETTA TWP. — Memorial Day is a day where we honor and remember the people who died while serving our country. Members of the Happy-Go-Lucky 4-H Club, mainly from Margaretta Township, met at Castalia Cemetery along with other members of the community on May 24 — prior to Memorial Day — to place flags at the graves of those who proudly served our country. As 4-H members, we are given the opportunity to learn leadership, citizenship and life skills through a variety of opportunities, such as camp, individual projects and giving back to the community. Other groups that were represented include Margaretta National Honor Society and the local Boy Scouts. The day consisted of the following: • We began with a brief dedication followed by instructions telling us exactly what we were expected to do. • Next we divided into small groups. Each group was given a bundle of flags. Then we set out and began placing flags at the veterans' graves. • After all the flags were placed, everyone was offered doughnuts and popsicles. This was a great experience for our members to actively participate in community service. As 4-H members, we pledge to serve our community to the best of our ability in an effort "to make the best better," which is our motto. Our members are grateful that we were able to be a part of this moving experience. Thank you to all who have served and continue to serve our country.
