Sandusky Schools receives heart device

SANDUSKY — Sandusky Schools was selected to receive a free lifesaving device. Thanks to the Ohio High School Athletic Association and State Representative D.J. Swearingen, R-Huron, the district was selected to receive a free Automated External Defibrillator, a device used to help those experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. Also known as an AED, the device can analyze a heart rhythm and, if necessary, deliver an electrical shock to re-establish an effective rhythm. A recent legislation passed by the state's General Assembly and Governor Mike DeWine requires all school districts to have AED machines. The National Federation of State High School Associations Foundation Board of Directors grants $500,000 for purchasing machines for the 2024-25 school year. The OHSAA was given 32 machines with the cost split between the association and the foundation. Swearingen chose Sandusky Schools to be a recipient of a machine and attended Tuesday's board meeting to speak about the district's award. "We are incredibly grateful to the Ohio High School Athletic Association and State Representative D.J. Swearingen for this generous and important contribution to our district," superintendent Dan Rambler said. "The safety of our students and staff is our top priority and this new AED further strengthens our emergency preparedness." The device will be housed at Strobel Field. This placement will ensure immediate access during sporting events and practices. It also follows the district's initiative to upgrade all existing AED machines, demonstrating the district's approach to maintaining a secure environment across its schools.
