Library hosts last-day party

HURON — Celebrating their final day of school, children of every age enjoyed pizza and games in a familiar, fun spot. On June 4, the Huron Public Library hosted one last hoorah for students. With snacks, drinks and games supplied, local kids from all different grade levels gathered to share one final moment before summer break officially started. All school year, many of these children visited the library, coming together with friends in the revamped children and teen area debuting in summer 2024. It's a spot where kids can go after school to work on assignments and play with friends. Melissa Harrington, the library's head of youth services, described why library staff wanted to throw an end-of-school-year bash for kids. "It has been a long school year, and the youth service staff has been there every step of the way, providing a safe space for students after school to hang out," Harrington said. "We have built relationships with the after-school crowd and thought we'd send them off to summer break with an end-of-year party." Children, of course, can still visit the library this summer, taking part in reading programs or stopping by with friends. The library's summer learning program began last week and spans through late July. Local students from preschool to 12th grade can participate. This year's theme is Color Our World. Participants are encouraged to create colorful bookmark designs for distribution to the public. "We wish them all a safe and fun-filled summer and hope to see them pop in every once and a while — but if not, we look forward to the next school year," Harrington said.
