GREAT OUTDOORS: State offering free fishing this weekend

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife is inviting Ohio residents to experience the state's fantastic public fishing opportunities without purchasing a fishing license on June 14-15. Even though fishing licenses are not required, all minimum size, closed season and daily limit rules apply. Annually offered since 1993, Free Fishing Days is no small financial sacrifice, but the state is gambling that it will result in the recruitment of new anglers and reactivation of former and occasional license holders to become regular customers. Currently enjoyed by about 20% of the population in the U.S., fishing ranks as the second most popular outdoor activity behind hiking/jogging. Getting to fish for free represents a savings of from $14 to $25 for those between the ages of 16 and 65 for a one-day and seasonal resident fishing license. For those 66 and older but born after Dec. 31, 1937, the price for an Ohio senior resident license drops to $10 per year. In both age categories, slight multi-year discounts and lifetime licenses are available for Ohio residents. Certain eligible Ohio residents born on or before Dec. 31, 1937, may obtain a free Ohio fishing license, valid for year-round use, at any license sales outlet or online at wildohio.gov. Also, some Ohio residents, including the mobility impaired and disabled veterans, are eligible for a free license, but must submit a formal application, available by calling 1-800-945-3543. A license is not required for persons younger than 16; those fishing in privately owned ponds, lakes or reservoirs from which fish do not migrate to and from; those giving assistance and using just one rod together with someone issued a free mobility impaired or blind fishing license; active duty members of the U.S. armed forces while on leave or furlough; or from property that they or their parents own or rent — except property that is in or borders state-owned parks or lakes. From Lake Erie to the Ohio River, and in many streams, reservoirs and ponds in between, Ohio offers many types of excellent fishing opportunities. Of course, as many regularly participating anglers know, Lake Erie offers the most variety of target species, areas and methods of fishing. However, this area also has many other options, including a cold-water trout stream near Castalia, Sandusky Bay, warmwater rivers, upground reservoirs, marshes and public ponds to fish with abundant locations providing public access. There are many other bodies of water where other species of fish not found locally lurk that can provide unique catches. Visit wildohio.gov or download the Ohio Division of Wildlife's free app (HuntFish OH) to locate public wildlife areas, access sites, fish species identification and other information. For the trip to be most enjoyable, the ODNR suggests choosing a pond, lake, or stream where beginners can easily catch a few fish. Use live bait to increase the odds of catching a fish. Take plenty of photos and bring snacks. Be prepared to spend time untangling lines, baiting hooks, waiting for a bite and landing fish. Have fun!
