Huron grads aim to capture the moment

HURON — Joslyn Dete stood confidently at the podium and spoke directly to her senior classmates, reflecting on the beginning of their high school journey. "For many, we never understood what people meant by the phrase, 'Time flies,' but here we are today, celebrating this milestone that always seemed many years away." On Friday night, crowds of family and friends gathered at Huron's football stadium to celebrate the 100 seniors dressed in caps and gowns on the one day they have been waiting for all of high school. Dete spoke about the greatest lesson she's learned throughout her high school years: perspective. She tells her senior classmates that she thinks of perspective as a camera lens, focusing on either the big picture or the smaller details that lie within. "Each day, you have dozens of choices to make. It's up to you to choose what 'lens' you choose to see through." Dete said. "If you get a bad grade on a test, do you view it as having failed? Or do you see it as an opportunity to push yourself to study more in hopes of getting a better grade next time?" Dete said. "If you have a bad day, do you complain about it? Or do you put that day aside and view tomorrow as a fresh start?" Julia Brown followed with her own perspective, speaking to her classmates about a different yet related lesson that connected to Dete's camera reference. Rather than speaking about choosing the right lens, she spoke about capturing the moment. "Sometimes we are so focused on what is next — the next job, the next class, the next grade, the next version of ourselves — that we lose sight of the beauty of what is happening now," Brown said. "The truth is, if we don't slow down and take a second to really live in the moment, these memories will pass by, blurry and gone, before we truly realize how good they really were," Brown said. As Brown spoke, many graduates reflected on the many memories they have made and the important lessons they have learned that they will take with them as they move on to the next chapter of their lives. "So yes, chase your future, but don't sprint past your present," Brown said. "Because this messy, beautiful, uncertain and incredible moment is all part of your story, too."
