Cedar Point hit by layoffs

SANDUSKY — Cedar Point is laying off full-time staff as part of a broad wave of job cuts by Six Flags Entertainment Corp., just as the summer season kicks off at the Sandusky-based amusement park. The layoffs come as Six Flags, which merged with Cedar Fair last year in an $8 billion deal, begins implementing cost-saving measures across its newly expanded portfolio of 42 amusement parks in North America. As part of those changes, the company has eliminated the roles of park presidents and general managers at all of its locations, including Cedar Point and Kings Island in Ohio, according to sources with knowledge of the situation. The total amount of cuts at the parks and which positions and departments experienced reductions were not clear. In a general statement, Six Flags said the reductions were made following "careful consideration and a thorough review" of business needs. Overall, the company plans to cut approximately 10% of its workforce in the coming weeks, affecting hundreds of full-time employees. The layoffs come during a turbulent time for the combined company. Six Flags reported a net loss of $220 million in the first quarter of 2025, attributing the downturn to unseasonable weather and broader economic uncertainty. Despite the shake-up, Cedar Point remains in full operation. The park has reintroduced its high-profile Top Thrill 2 roller coaster and is preparing to debut Siren's Curse, a first-of-its-kind tilt coaster, later this summer. The staffing reductions mark the first major restructuring since the Six Flags-Cedar Fair merger was finalized on July 1, 2024, creating the largest amusement park operator in North America. Investors were promised $120 million in cost synergies as part of the deal. It also comes on the heels of pay cuts to Cedar Point staff which were announced in January. It remains unclear how the leadership changes and staffing cuts will affect day-to-day park operations, but the moves signal a shift toward centralized management and a tighter corporate structure as the company seeks to boost profitability. Cedar Point, located along Lake Erie, is currently open daily for the summer season.
