City Hall could be moving downtown

PORT CLINTON — Port Clinton's city administration could be calling a new building home. Local officials are moving forward with plans to relocate City Hall from East Perry Street to the former KeyBank building at 201 Madison St. It aims to revitalize the downtown area and improve access to city services, according to a news release. The $1.5 million project, approved by city council, includes purchase and renovations, with short-term bonds, or loans, authorized to fund the effort. The city anticipates a yearlong renovation period, and officials recently met with architects to begin planning. KeyBank retains a lease through 2029. It wasn't immediately clear what the company's position would be or if and/or when a deal would be finalized. Port Clinton Mayor Mike Snider supports the move as a key step in downtown revitalization, the release states. The relocation is expected to bring over 20 city employees downtown and boost local business activity. "It's been an unspoken goal of mine, one I've since learned is shared by many in city government. We all believe City Hall belongs downtown," Snider said. "A strong city is reflected in a strong downtown, and from that, the rest of the city prospers. This move allows us to lead by example and send a clear message to both locals and potential investors: we are fully committed to downtown and its continuing growth." City officials said the move is part of a broader vision to bring energy and investment back to the city's core. They point to Sandusky's successful 2019 relocation of its city offices downtown as a model, which has been a significant milestone in Sandusky's efforts to rejuvenate its downtown. The future of the current City Hall site remains under discussion.
