SBC SOFTBALL: Jeffrey, Cloud, Sanchez named top players

The top pitchers in the Sandusky Bay Conference Lake and Bay were named Most Outstanding Players in their respective divisions Tuesday. Clyde sophomore Taitum Jeffrey was named as the top player in the Lake after leading the Fliers to a league title and 10-0 record in the Lake. Edison sophomore Abby Cloud and Port Clinton senior Ashton Sanchez were named co-MVPs in the Bay. The Fliers had six players selected to the 12-player Lake first team. Joining Jeffrey were senior catcher Kennedi Long, senior outfielder Ella Howey, junior infielders Vanessa West and Mya Stiefel and freshman outfielder Ariah Farrar. Clyde topped Genoa in a district semifinal Tuesday and is scheduled to play for the district championship Thursday. Also making the first team in the Lake were Norwalk freshman pitcher Kenadee Lesch, Perkins sophomore infielder Aubrey Ransom, Norwalk senior infielder Lilly Farmer, Bellevue senior infielder Tessa Blankenship, Norwalk senior outfielder Mya Prochnow and Bellevue senior outfielder Payton Hicks. Hicks had a standout season for the Lady Red, batting .468 with a league-best six home runs, 27 runs batted in, 36 hits and 29 runs scored. Bellevue and Columbian were the only schools to post statistics on the SBC website. Edison's Cloud led her team to a perfect 10-0 mark in the Bay and a No. 3 seed in the Division V Clyde District. The Chargers face Crestview in a district semifinal Wednesday. Cloud had a .447 batting average with 38 RBI and posted a 17-4 pitching record with a 3.21 ERA and 135 strikeouts in 124 1/3 innings. Sanchez batted .520 for Port Clinton with seven home runs and 27 RBI. She had an 11-11 pitching record with 200 strikeouts in 140 2/3 innings. Sanchez had more than 600 career strikeouts. Edison registered six first team picks. Joining Cloud were four other unanimous picks — sophomore catcher Macari Harris, junior infielders Peyton Taylor and Stella Brown and sophomore outfielder Natalie Desautels — and senior outfielder Ivy Kluding. Other first team picks were Huron sophomore infielder Lucy Hinners, Port Clinton senior infielder Olivia Emerson, Willard senior infielder Lauren Hammons, Huron freshman outfielder Adelyn VanSickle and Margaretta freshman outfielder Ellaynah Schaefer. Eight of the 12 Bay first-teamers are underclassmen. Danbury senior Moriah Hatfield was the only area player on the River Division 20-player first team. New Riegel sophomore pitcher Karsyn Piper was named Most Outstanding Player in the River.
