Update: 2 killed in Fremont train collision

Update 1 a.m. FREMONT — At least two people are dead following a train collision in Fremont on Sunday. At approximately 7 p.m., first responders were called to the area of the Hayes Avenue railroad crossing on the Miles Newton Bridge for the report of a train versus pedestrians crash. Two women were confirmed dead according to Sandusky County Sheriff Chris Hilton. Mayor Danny Sanchez said the women were a 58 year old and a 38 year old who were mother and daughter, according to a WTOL story. The adults appeared to have been fishing, Sanchez said. Their names have not been released as of early Monday. A child about one year old was pulled from the Sandusky River by a person who witnessed the collision. CPR was started on scene and the child was transported to St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo. The child's current condition is unknown. In addition to the one year old, at least one other person was transported to the hospital. The Ballville Township Volunteer Fire Department was on scene with a boat to search the river for a missing five year old. Multiple dive teams were also on scene according to Sanchez. For about two hours a helicopter aided in the search for the five year old. The train blocked the crossing for about four hours. It was finally cleared from the crossing just after 11 p.m. It was a northbound Norfolk Southern train. Update 9:35 p.m. The two people who died are both adult women, Sandusky County Sheriff Chris Hilton said. An infant was pulled from the river by a witness and CPR was started, Hilton said. The child was taken to the St. Vincent's hospital in Toledo. A 5-year-old remains missing and authorities are searching for the child. It appeared that the train was traveling north. Update 9:25 p.m. Two fatalities are confirmed, according to Fremont Mayor Danny Sanchez. Multiple people have been transported to the hospital. A search is currently underway for anyone else who might have been struck.
