PREP ROUNDUP: SMCC gets first softball win of season

SANDUSKY — St. Mary Central Catholic picked up its first softball win of the season Tuesday, topping Old Fort 14-7 in Sandusky Bay Conference River Division action. The Panthers (1-22, 1-16 River) scored 11 runs in the first inning. Rachel Spicer and Bailey Woodruff each singled and doubled for SMCC. Spicer scored twice and drove in a run while Woodruff had two RBI and a run scored. Rachel Grimm doubled and drove in two runs for the Panthers while Britt Rhoads had a single, three runs scored and two RBI. Laney Torres went the first four innings for the win in the circle. Taryn Tyler had two doubles, a single and three runs batted in while Payton Weilnau lined three singles and three RBI. Genna Bragg added three singles and a RBI. Veanna Helmstetter singled, doubled and had three RBI. Scheid earned the pitching win. She allowed six runs (three earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks in 4 1/3 innings. HR: (E) Chlebowski Tournament Margaretta 15, Toledo Christian 5 TOLEDO — Lucy Edwards finished a home run shy of the cycle, leading the sixth-seeded Polar Bears to a 15-5 win over Toledo Christian in a Division VI tournament opener. Margaretta improved to 7-14 and will face top-seed Gibsonburg (15-6) at 4 p.m. May 20 in a district semifinal at Clyde High School. Edwards singled, doubled, tripled, drove in three runs and scored three runs for the Polar Bears. Brooke Hastings had two singles and four RBI while Elliana Young had a single, triple, two RBI and three runs. Mattie Kovalske scored three times and Ella Limberios singled, drove in a run and scored twice. Ellie Grime picked up the win. She struck out three in a complete-game effort.
