Celebrate Star Wars Day

HURON — Art, entertainment, education… Oh my. All this and more can be found this month at the Huron Public Library, 333 Williams St. If you're looking for a specific way to be social, there are several different types of clubs and group meetings: • Every Monday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., you can attend Mahjong Monday and play with other locals, regardless of your experience level. • Elderly individuals are invited to be active every Tuesday at 10:30 a.m., during Senior Stretch where instructor Beverly Henderson will teach a basic stretch class geared towards seniors. • All month long, art enthusiasts can enjoy all the work on display in the downstairs gallery created by the talented students at Firelands Montessori Academy. Other events and activities include: Saturday, May 3 • Chess with Paul Sherwood from 10 a.m. to noon — Everyone is welcome to join local chess enthusiast Paul Sherwood, who is available as an instructor or competitor. Come for fun or to improve your game. This program is open to all ages and skill levels. Sunday, May 4 • May the Fourth, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. — On Star Wars Day, also known as "May the 4th be with you," visit the library to check out a space-themed display that will include activities and a variety of "Star Wars" materials. Patrons can receive a "Star Wars" token for checking out any materials related to the franchise no matter if you root for the Dark Side or the Rebel Alliance. One token per patron while supplies last. Monday, May 5 • Mahjong Mondays from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. — Join local mahjong players for a game. All skill levels are welcome to play. Tuesday, May 6 • Stitch Niche- Crochet Club beginning at 3 p.m. — If you love to crochet and would you like to learn, join in on the knitting craze. Meet up and share current yarn projects, get help from library staff or just enjoy being in the company of other crafters. Bring a project or start a new one. Supplies will be provided. Wednesday, May 7 • Virtual Author Talk: How to Use Anxiety to Thrive beginning at 2 p.m. — Everyone has anxiety. Furthermore, our incessant quest to rid ourselves of this ubiquitous human emotion worsens it. What if, instead of fighting our anxiety, we could turn it into a strength? In this online webinar led by Dr. David Rosmarin, you will learn how to use anxiety to become more self-accepting, connected to others and be resilient. • Lake Erie Writers Alliance beginning at 5:30 p.m. — Engage in writing critiques, discussions and more. All levels and types of writers are welcome. Thursday, May 8 • Sign Language Group beginning at 6 p.m. — Learn beginning sign language with fellow students in an entertaining and informal setting. Friday, May 9 • Scrabble Fridays beginning at 1 p.m. — Join other Scrabble lovers for a few hours of afternoon word play. Beginners welcome. Saturday, May 10 • Coffee and Conversation from 10-11:30 a.m. — Enjoy coffee with representatives from Huron Rotary in where anyone can ask questions ot have a conversation about what is happening locally. An expert will teach everything one needs to know about this accessible graphic design software. Registration required. • Socrates Cafe beginning at 6:30 p.m. — Discuss philosophical topics with fellow patrons in this monthly meeting. In the spirit of its great philosophical namesake, Socrates Cafe is concerned with allowing the participants of the regular discussions to determine the ongoing course of their conversations. Each month's topic flows out of the preceding meeting's conversation. Tuesday, May 13 • Senior Stretch from 10:30-11:30 a.m. — Join Beverly Henderson for this basic stretching class geared towards senior citizens. • Art Club beginning at 3 p.m. — The library will arrange a different still life for local artists in this monthly club. Draw or paint the still life and learn tips from others. Art supplies will not be provided. When the weather permits, the club will meet at local parks. • America, Ohio and Huron — Linked in History beginning at 6 p.m. — For three decades, the electric interurban railway played a major part in the economic life of the Midwest. During that period, the Lake Shore Electric Railway operated routes from Cleveland to Detroit, via Avon Lake, Lorain, Vermilion, Huron, Sandusky and Toledo. Highlights of this presentation will include photos of passengers, stations, stops, bridges, trains and route maps of Huron and its surrounding communities. This will be presented by the Huron Historical Society. Wednesday, May 14 • Rockin' Readers Book beginning at 5:15 p.m. — Group book club selections are available at the library for tweens who want to join this monthly club. Read the book and then join the discussion. Group members help select each month's books. Parent/Guardian permission is required to participate. Registration is required once a year to join the club. This is for children in grades 3-6. • Euchre Night beginning at 6:30 p.m. —If you are an avid euchre player or someone who wants to learn this fast-paced card game, join players in the audio-visual area of the library for pickup games. Bring a deck of cards if possible. No registration necessary. • Virtual Author Talk On Writing a Brilliant, Dark and Diabolical Thriller beginning at 7 p.m. — Grab your popcorn, grab your friend, and join us for a propulsive online conversation with author Liann Zhang as she chats with us about her debut thriller, "Julie Chan is Dead." Thursday, May 15 • Lunchtime Program Tea Tasting beginning at 1 p.m. — Our annual tea tasting will once again be presented by the Summer Sisters, experts in all things tea. Refreshments will be served. • Book Exchange Book Group "Do No Harm; Stories of Life, Death and Brain Surgery" by Dr. Henry Marsh beginning at 6:30 p.m. — This book group focuses on an exploration of popular and eclectic fiction and nonfiction works.
