Calvary Baptist has a family feel

PERKINS TWP. — Calvary Baptist is open to all. Worship services are 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sundays with Sunday school in between. A 6 p.m. Sunday worship service also occurs. Worship styles vary between the Sunday services, with the contemporary music at 8:30 a.m. and a traditional music at 11 a.m.More programming for children, youth and adults is available on Wednesdays. The church sits on 15 acres and includes a fieldhouse with a basketball court and more for activities.The congregation is led by three pastors: David Hixson, senior pastor; Nathan Klier, the youth and outreach pastor and Robb Fowler serves as the associate pastor. Between them, Calvary Baptist's ministers have about 60 years of experience.Though the church boasts about 300 members, people don't feel like strangers. "There's a family feel," Hixson said.Added Klier: "Tighter connections are made in the Bible studies and during Sunday school."On March 2, Calvary Baptist celebrated its 88th anniversary. In 1933, the church started at 1012 Columbus Ave. in downtown Sandusky, where Firelands Grace Church is located today. In 1970, Calvary Baptist moved to its current location and has expanded multiple times since.Their mission hasn't changed. "We're all about exalting Christ in all things," Hixson said.To do so, they strive to abide by four pillars: Learning God's word, living godly lives, loving God's people and leading others to Christ.
