Catalog, smartphone app switched for local libraries

SANDUSKY — Patrons of Sandusky Library and many other local libraries accessing the library using an app on their smartphone or tablet will need to delete their old app and install a new one.That news applies not just to Sandusky Library patrons, but to patrons who hold library cards for public libraries in Bellevue, Clyde, Fremont, Huron, Milan and Berlin Heights, Norwalk and Vermilion.All of those libraries are members of the CLEVNET library consortium, which consists of Cleveland Public Library and about 40 other libraries across northern Ohio. (Port Clinton's library belongs to a different network and isn't affected.)All CLEVNET libraries use a common catalog system, and CLEVNET switched the catalog to a new software system, SirsiDynix, on Wednesday.As part of the switch, the old CLEVNET app for Android and iOS phones and tablets no longer works, and library patrons who use an app will need to download the BookMyne app from the Android or iOS app stores. The old CLEVNET app must be deleted before the new BookMyne app is installed. Patrons will need a PIN number to log in to the new app. If they already had a PIN, it will migrate along with their other library account information to the new app. If not, they will need to create one.Patrons who haven't tried using an app for the library may want to download BookMyne and give it a try.They can search the catalog across the entire CLEVNET system, put a book, movie, sound recording or audiobook on hold, and have the item transferred to a local library for pickup.The Sandusky Register tested that aspect of the new app on Thursday and was able to find a DVD in the catalog and put it on hold.In addition, it is claimed some of the digital downloads available through CLEVNET can be accessed via the app.A posting on the BookMyne app at the Sandusky Library's website claims, "The new catalog will allow users to download and stream e-materials like eBooks, music, and videos in the same interface they use for physical materials like books and DVDs, without leaving the catalog."The Sandusky Register's tests Thursday, however, showed that the digital downloads didn't always work. Users used to accessing digital library services such as Overdrive and Hoopla Digital may need to continue using the separate apps for the services. Both of those apps work well and are generally reliable. Joe Pohorence, a Sandusky Library graphic designer who also handles IT, said Thursday he is aware there are bugs.As people report issues, Pohorence is writing them down and passing them along.
