Departures create uncertainty in twp.

VERMILION — Within the past month, two trustees and the highest-ranking employee for Vermilion Township all resigned, sending shockwaves and creating uncertainty throughout the political subdivision. The following officials have recently tendered their resignation: • In March, both township trustee Bob Kurtz and administrator Keith Sexton stepped down without giving much notice or reason. Kurtz took a position with another company. Sexton didn't make his reasons clear in a public space. • This past week, another trustee, Rodger Scott also quit. It's not exactly known why he did. Their collective departures follow public concern surrounding the way a February trustee meeting went down without Kurtz in attendance. It led to some residents calling for Scott's resignation. Scott led this meeting. Some residents, meanwhile, did express their appreciation for Scott's years of service. Back in March, township trustees came under fire from many locals after voting to approve a new housing project overseen by Redwood Apartments. It's the same apartment company that continues to build homes on East Perkins Avenue in the Sandusky area. Right now, there's only one official trustee on Vermilion Township's board: Ken Baughman. In the meantime, Don Rowe Sr., who serves on the township's zoning board of appeals, will fill out Kurtz's remaining term, which ends Dec. 31. As of today, Scott's term, which also ends Dec. 31, remains vacant. The administrative position, which oversees all government business and reports to trustees, hasn't been addressed yet. Baughman indicated township trustees, in a move to keep the public more informed about government business, could begin meeting twice a month, up from its present schedule of once a month.
