Local Red Cross helping with Kentucky floods

More than 20 people associated with the local American Red Cross chapter, which serves Erie and Huron counties, recently joined disaster relief efforts in Kentucky and areas affected beyond there, including Cincinnati. Because of torrential rainfall — leading to historic flooding and river crests in recent days — many parts of the region have experienced water-related issues. Many neighborhoods are underwater. Structures, such as houses, have been submerged. "The Red Cross is rushing critical emergency support to thousands of families pummeled by relentless floods and tornadoes across the South and Midwest," according to an organizational statement. "Severe storms, strong winds, tornadoes and heavy rains have inundated communities, leaving a trail of damaged homes, roadways and critical infrastructure," it continued, underscoring how, "The threat of flooding isn't over as rivers continue to rise." More than 600 trained Red Cross responders "are working alongside Red Cross partners to provide safe shelter, nutritious meals and emergency supplies in storm-impacted communities," the statement read. The Red Cross has already provided hundreds of overnight stays along with more than 16,300 meals and snacks and thousands of relief items. In shelters, trained Red Cross volunteers are helping families cope during this challenging time and replacing prescription medications, eyeglasses or critical medical equipment like canes and wheelchairs. "Families are depending on the Red Cross for assistance now," the statement read.
