Dancing for cancer patients

Editor's note: George Rhodes is a senior at Edison High School and enrolled in the district's Teen Leadership Corps class, which empowers teenagers to achieve their leadership potential through a character and service-based curriculum. He and his classmates recently organized an all-night fundraiser. MILAN TWP. — Students enrolled in Edison High School's Teen Leadership Corps recently hosted the annual Dance Marathon event. The event, which supports local cancer patients, lasted a total of 12 hours, going from 7 p.m. on March 29 to 7 a.m. on March 30. At the end of every hour, students taught the moral dance to those in attendance, which consisted of learning a set of dance moves that went along with various songs that changed by the hour. Another notable part of the event: No one was allowed to sit down until the event ended. The marathon also consisted of many games and tournaments. This would include a "Mario Kart" tournament, karaoke, dodgeball, a taco-eating contest, cornhole and more. More than 75 Edison High School students attended this event with a majority staying throughout its entirety. All told, the event raised more than $1,500. The money will be used to fund cancer care kits Edison Teen Leadership Corps put together for those in need. The next class project centers on putting together the cancer care kits, which include many items, such as puzzles, socks, playing cards, pens/pencils and more. Anyone can contribute money and/or items toward this project.
