Fire marshal releases spring cleaning tips

COLUMBUS — The state fire marshal has released a list of fire prevention tips for the spring season. "Spring has officially arrived," a fire marshal press release states, "and more many Ohioans that means it's time to start spring cleaning in and around their homes." The fire marshal encourages people to not only pay attention to their homes appearances but also to improve safety. "By adding some simple items to your to-do list, such as reducing clutter, clearing debris and properly maintaining appliances, you can help prevent fires from occurring in and around your home," State Fire Marshal Kevin Reardon said. The release offers a list of suggested to-do list items: • Clean out your clothes dryer • Declutter to reduce fire risks • Clear outdoor debris • Check your grill • Properly use and store gasoline "By incorporating these tips and guidelines into your spring-cleaning routine, you can help ensure your home is safer from fire risks," Reardon said. The marshal's office also recommends that people check the batteries in their smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. "Smoke and CO alarms should be tested monthly to ensure they are properly sounding," the release states. "If a smoke alarm is more than 10 years old, it should be discarded and replaced."
