Courage, compassion define Madison Brenton

Editor's note: Madison Brenton, a 2012 Perkins High School graduate, passed away in 2018 after being diagnosed with pulmonary veno-occlusive disease, a rare condition caused by the blockage of small veins in one's lungs. It caused hypertension, which placed great stress on her heart. Madison, 25, left behind her two children, Adilene and Brenton; her parents, Matthew and Tammie; her brother, Seth; and those who loved and cared deeply for her. SANDUSKY — Madison Brenton's story is one of immense courage, resilience and an unwavering belief in hope. Her journey battling a life-changing illness exposed the stark realities faced by many who struggle with complex medical conditions. Living on just a $780 monthly disability stipend, Madison relied on her family for even the most basic needs. Without their support, her life — and the lives of her children — would have unraveled. Tragically, many facing similar crises do not have this safety net. Overwhelmed agencies often cannot bridge the gap, leaving families to make impossible choices. Her legacy lives on Established in her honor, the Madison Brenton Foundation — a Sandusky-based nonprofit helping those within and beyond the community — is dedicated to ensuring that no one has to choose between treatment and survival. Madison's motto, "Life doesn't have to be perfect to be beautiful," guides every initiative: from emergency financial aid to long-term healing programs. Her fight was not just personal: It became a rallying cry that united the Sandusky community. Neighbors, friends and strangers came together, offering not only financial support but also hope. Their compassion inspired the creation of our foundation that now supports others in need. To date, the foundation has: • Provided emergency financial aid to 54 families • Offered 18 weeks of free grief yoga, serving 20 to 30 attendees weekly • Funded Camp Good Grief scholarships, giving children who have lost a parent or grandparent a space to heal One recipient, a 26-year-old battling sarcoma, faced homelessness after undergoing treatment in Cleveland. His social worker reached out in desperation, and the Madison Brenton Foundation stepped in, covering rent and groceries to ensure stability in his fight for survival. Another recipient, a 30-year-old battling brain cancer, shared: "Blankets and cups are kind, but they won't keep my lights on or pay my rent." These stories illustrate the foundation's core mission: addressing urgent needs that too often go unmet. Growing needs Madison's journey opened our eyes to the severe lack of support for people with complex medical conditions. Studies confirm that families facing serious illnesses prioritize food, housing and utilities — necessities that often become secondary in crisis. Since its development, the Madison Brenton Foundation has stepped up to fill this gap, offering aid to those who need it most. As the cost of living continues to rise — such as for rent, utilities, groceries and gas — so, too, does the demand for assistance. Based on current trends, the foundation expects requests for support to more than double in the coming months. Additionally, government funding cuts to social services threaten to leave even more families without critical support.
