Report: Man ran from cops, attempted to ditch handgun

SANDUSKY — A Sandusky man is facing felony charges after allegedly running from police and ditching a firearm. Alex K. Trussell, 19, 1000 block Jackson St. Extension, is facing felony counts of carrying concealed weapons and receiving stolen property. He is additionally charged with misdemeanor obstructing official business and was served with a bench warrant. Just after 7 p.m. on Monday, officers were called to the 1500 block of Hayes Ave. (Ohio 4) for the report of a person's ex-partner attempting to enter the home. When they arrived, the man was no longer near the home so officers began checking the area, according to a Sandusky police report. Officers soon located Trussell in the 1400 block of Prospect St., and he allegedly took off running. Trussell reportedly hopped one fence and then another which caused officers to lose sight of him, the report states. An officer drew his service weapon and ordered Trussell to come out and he reportedly did. Trussell was placed in handcuffs, searched and taken to a cruiser. A witness then told officers, Trussell allegedly threw a dropped a bag in her yard, the report states. When officers retrieved the bag they found a Springfield 9 mm handgun, according to the report. The gun was loaded with a drum-style magazine and had a round in the chamber. Officers determined the bag was located in Trussell's path of travel, the report states. They photographed the gun and the path of travel. After advising Trussell of his Miranda rights, he refused to speak with officers. But when one officer told another that Trussell did not wish to speak, he allegedly uttered, "what's there to talk about, you found it?" Upon running the serial number of the gun, it was found to have been reported stolen through Perkins police in June 2022. Trussell was charged with obstructing official business due to running from police and carrying a concealed weapon. He is scheduled to appear in Sandusky Municipal Court at 10 a.m. on Friday for a plea hearing.
