Suspected drunk driver smashes fire hydrant

SANDUSKY — A suspected intoxicated driver crashed her car into a fire hydrant in Sandusky on early Sunday morning. Just before 4 a.m., officers were called to the intersection of West Perkins Avenue and Stahlwood Drive for an automatic crash report. A caller also informed dispatchers that a car crashed into a fire hydrant and either struck another car or came close to doing so. Officers arrived to find a black Honda sedan on the boulevard with a damaged fire hydrant and water spewing from the pipe. The water flooded Stahlwood Drive and streamed all the way north down the street to where the road curves and becomes Karl-Ann Drive. Officers walked a 27-year-old Sandusky woman through standardized field sobriety tests. She was then arrested for suspicion of OVI, a misdemeanor. The driver was transported to the Perkins police station to be offered a breath alcohol test, according to a Sandusky police report. She reportedly provided a sample that was more than two-and-a-half times the legal limit. "We're waiting for the city water department to come out and turn off the water," Sandusky police Sgt. Ernesto Hernandez said at the scene on Sunday. "The temperature is above freezing, so we don't have to worry about all of this water turning into ice."
