Updated: Teacher charged with sex crime

MONROEVILLE — An area educator was arrested and booked into jail on Friday. Holly Bauer, 42, of Monroeville, a social studies teacher with Monroeville Schools, was charged with one count of rape, a first-degree felony. She was arrested by the Huron County Sheriff's Office, according to Huron County Jail records. District superintendent Kristin Kaple-Jones said Bauer will be suspended while her criminal court case is pending. "The district will fully cooperate with law enforcement in its investigation of the matter and is committed to supporting the needs of its students during this difficult time," Kaple-Jones said. "Our focus continues to be on maintaining a safe and positive learning environment for all students." Bauer was placed on paid leave from her position at the district in September 2024 while she was under investigation for allegations of "unprofessional conduct," according to a letter in her personnel file obtained by the newspaper. Norwalk Municipal Court records did not list her case as of late Friday. It's not clear if Bauer has hired an attorney or when her initial court appearance would be. Editor's note: Huron County Jail records initially indicated that Bauer was charged with unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, sexual battery and burglary, as an earlier version of this story reported. Court records indicate she faces only the one count of rape. It's not known why those charges were initially listed.
