Huron holds on to beat Edison

HURON — Basketball can be a game of runs. Friday at Huron High School, the Tigers fended off Edison 42-34 in Sandusky Bay Conference Bay Division girls action. The start of the game saw Huron jump out to a quick 7-0 run behind five quick points from senior Jessica Brown. The Tigers (7-8, 4-3 SBC Bay) kept the momentum throughout the rest of the quarter jumping out to a 15-0 lead. Edison did not make a single field goal. The only point came from senior Ivy Kluding, who split a pair of free throws. Huron led 15-1 at the end of the period. "That first half, I thought the girls were locked in and we were playing well," Huron coach Darius Schaeffer said. "We felt good about ourselves and the intensity we had." The second quarter saw the hosts continue to strengthen their lead. After baskets by Brown and junior Addie LaCivata, Huron led 19-1. Edison (8-9, 1-7) got its first bucket from the field at the 4:35 mark in the second quarter. Huron extended their lead to 29-5 at half. Edison coach Chelsey Meagrow told her girls at halftime the scoreboard does not show effort. "We can either come out in the second half and say the deficit is too much or we can continue to play," Meagrow said. "The girls kept fighting and playing hard no matter what the scoreboard said." That attitude led to a completely different second half for the visitors and it showed on the scoreboard. In the third quarter, Edison went on an 8-2 run to cut the lead to 31-13. In the stanza, Kluding added four points. "I thought we got too comfortable in the second half," Schaeffer said. "I told the girls we had to continue to play because Edison is very well-coached and would not go away. Coach Meagrow gets maximum effort from her ladies." In the fourth, the game became very interesting. The Chargers played a solid defense and at the 3:54 mark, they cut the deficit to 35-24. Huron stopped the run after a basket from sophomore Jenna Cox. After a scrum, a technical on Huron gave Edison two free throws to cut the lead to 39-33. After a miss, Huron held on for the 42-34 win. The Tigers were paced by Brown with 17, while Edison got 20 points from Kluding. Huron is back in action Wednesday against Norwalk. Edison takes the court next versus Clyde on Wednesday.
