BOYS BASKETBALL: Margaretta, Washington roll at Flyin' to the Hoop

KETTERING — Margaretta and Julian Washington made themselves at home during their game at Flyin' to the Hoop — one of the biggest high school basketball showcases in the country. The Polar Bears demolished Valley View 86-51 on Monday afternoon at Kettering Fairmont's Trent Arena in what was billed as the event's "small school showdown." Margaretta jumped out to a 26-13 lead after one quarter and cruised to victory on the final day of the four-day event that draws big-name talent from across the country. "I was real pleased with the young men," Margaretta coach Steve Keller Jr. said. "They came down with the motive to play good basketball and we shared it and got out in transition." Washington dominated with 35 points, 14 rebounds, seven assists and five blocked shots. He scored 16 points in the first quarter. The rangy 6-foot-4 junior has several NCAA Division I offers. After his performance in front of several college coaches at the showcase, he quickly added an offer from Tulane. "He shot it very, very well and got in aggressive mode," Keller said. "The guys shared the ball and he changed the game defensively with his length. "He has those offers and now there are some high-majors taking a look." The Polar Bears, who improved to 15-0, totaled 24 assists and shot 62 percent from the floor. Tyson Bailey added 17 points for Margaretta. Judah Keller finished with 11 points and seven rebounds and Nolan Wiley added 10 points and seven rebounds. Valley View, a Division IV school located in Germantown about 15 miles southwest of Dayton, was led by Brody Denny, who had 20 points. "It was a really nice trip for us," Keller said. "Valley View had been winning a lot of games and we were able to have some success." The Polar Bears, ranked No. 6 in the state in Division VI by MaxPreps, host Port Clinton on Thursday and host Old Fort on Saturday. St. John's, which got its fourth straight win to improve to 8-5, made 14 3-point shots. "That is legitimately the best shooting team I've coached against, and when you have 6-8, two 6-6 and 6-3 guys that are all guards and that can all knock it down, that is a tough," Perkins coach Eric Kochendoerfer said. "We scheduled this game as a barometer heading into the last month of the season. This game does not change anything when it comes to our teams goals." Tim Boals led the Pirates (9-5) with eight points. Perkins will host Tiffin Columbian on Thursday.
