Margaretta, Huron win SBC Bay swim titles

PORT CLINTON — Alayna Biehl won two individual events and was a part of two winning relay teams to help Margaretta win the Sandusky Bay Conference Bay Division girls swimming championship Saturday at Port Clinton High School. It is the first school championship in program history for the Polar Bears. "This was an exciting win today," Margaretta coach Marnie Hallet-Szymanski said. "The girls have been putting in the work to make it happen." Margaretta finished with 212 points while the host Redskins, winners of the last six SBC titles, were runners-up with 171 points. Huron was third with 84 points. Biehl took home wins in the 50-yard freestyle and 100 breaststroke. Biehl, along with Kayla Aceto, Kylee Aceto and Savannah Suto, took home a win in the 200 medley relay. Biehl also teamed up with Lexis Murray, Suto and Sydnie Riedy to win the 200 free relay. "Alayna had an awesome day today," Hallet-Szymanski said. "She is the ultimate teammate. She was on deck throughout the meet cheering on her teammates." Individually, Riedy won the 100 free and Kayla Aceto was the winner in the 200 individual medley. The Redskins were led by Halle Puffenberger and Gabrielle Heilmann. The two, along with Morgan Weichman and Michaela Stork, won the 400 free relay. Earlier, Puffenberger took home a win in the 200 free while Heilman won the 100 back. On the boys side, Huron took the title with 198 points while also winning its first SBC title. Port Clinton fended off Margaretta for second with 161 points. The Polar Bears tallied 158 points. Huron won a pair of relay events as Beren Dennis, Scott Allen, Carter Schlessman and TJ Murray won the 200 medley while Schlessman, Dennis, Izaiah Polak and Jason Lenczyk were first in the 400 free relay. Also for Huron, Allen was victorious in the 100 breaststroke. Carson Miller won two events for Margaretta, taking the 50 free and 100 fly. He was also on the winning 200 free relay team that included Eli Conner, Jace Berg and Lucan White. Port Clinton was led by Wyatt Siefke and Derek Barnhill. Siefke was victorious in the 200 individual medley and the 100 free while Barnhill took home the 200 free and 500 free. Also for the Redskins, Lee Higgins won the 100 back. Huron divers Hayden Holmes and Addie Hoffman won diving competitions that took place Thursday at Margaretta. The Blue Streaks won the championship with 162 points while Vermilion was runner-up with 130. Perkins (102), Norwalk (81) and Edison (65) rounded out the top five. "We swam great today," Sandusky coach Tommy Patterson said. "I am so proud of both our girls and boys teams. Swimming in a conference meet is always a team effort and our kids were ready to go. We discussed what each of them could do to contribute to the team. "Each of the kids brought enthusiasm and put it into their races." Lazzara won in his top two events — the 100 fly and 100 back. He teamed with Terrance Carrasco, Logan VanScoy and Maxwell Meagrow to win the 200 medley relay. Later, the same four took home the 400 free relay. "Max had a solid day today," Patterson said. "He had two quality races, but it really was about our 18 Blue Streaks having a great day. It definitely was a total team effort for the boys and earning a championship is a great feeling." Cole Rini and William Matheson from Vermilion were each part of three wins. Rini won the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke while Matheson won the 50 and 100 free. They teamed up with Joe Schaub and Joseph Webb to take home the 200 free relay. Clyde's Eli Morgan took home victories in the 200 and 500 free. On the girls side, Columbian won the team title with 229 points while Perkins was second with 215. Norwalk finished third with 88 points while Sandusky (75) was fourth and Vermilion (45) was fifth. Ella West was the top swimmer for Perkins. She won the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke. She also won the 200 medley relay and 400 free relay with Katie Skavnak, Natalie Mitchel and Lo Bucher. Mitchel added a second-place finish in the 100 fly and 100 back and Skavnak was second in the 100 free. Also for the Pirates, Amiya Drury was the diving champion with a score of 337 while Perkins' Paige Schnittker was second with 291.80.
