Enter greeting card contest

SANDUSKY — Ageism is more than prejudice or discrimination based on a person's older age. Its consequences can also be a contributing factor to being abused in later life. When the social culture believes being older is equal to being a person of lesser value, it makes older people more susceptible to being abused by others: physically, psychologically and/or financially. To combat ageism, and ultimately elder abuse, Serving Our Seniors is seeking Erie County residents who are 60 and older to participate in the Serving Our Seniors greeting card art contest. A $100 prize will be awarded for the best greeting card made by the contestant, portraying aging as something positive or cool. No previous experience is required to participate in the contest. The artist may use drawing, painting or photography to illustrate their positive message. There is a special bonus competition. Serving Our Seniors is also looking for a new term to replace "senior citizen," a word or term that has not been used/tried before. For example: "seasoned citizen," "older American," "mature adult" or "silver citizen," all of which are not eligible for this contest. The winner will receive a $100 prize. Projects must be submitted, in hard copy form no later than April 10 to Serving Our Seniors' office, 310 E. Boalt St., Sandusky. The winner will be announced by Serving Our Seniors on Thursday, May 1, the first day of Older Americans Month. The winner will also appear on the cover of Serving Our Seniors magazine for the edition spanning July through September. People can call 419-624-1856 for more information.
