Four Perkins players named All-Ohio first team

Four seniors from Perkins were selected to the first team on the Division IV All-Ohio list, released Tuesday by the Ohio Prep Sports Media Association. Running back Isaac Bunts, wide receiver Braylon Collier, defensive lineman Haiden Bollini and linebacker Mikey Young all were named to the D-IV first team. The four standouts helped the Pirates compile a 36-5 record over the last three seasons. Perkins dropped a 37-36 decision to Indian Valley in the state championship game last Saturday night in Canton. "Unbelievable group of kids with great character," Perkins coach Jalen Santoro said. "The (championship game) loss is hard, but knowing you don't get another year coaching those kids is the hardest part." Three other Pirates — quarterback Sam Schweinfurth, offensive lineman Eli Sanchez and defensive back Joey Diederich were honorable mention picks. Santoro was disappointed that senior defensive end Reagan Kaufman (11 QB sacks, third-team pick last year) and junior linebacker Braxden Martin (140 tackles) did not make the All-Ohio team. "There's a handful of other guys who deserve something, but it's not the first time that's happened or the last," Santoro said. Bunts finished the season with 2,388 rushing yards and 32 touchdowns. Collier, who will play next year for Michigan State, broke his own school records with 84 receptions for 1,423 and 25 touchdowns this season. Bollini, a repeat first-team selection who played offense and defense, made 74 tackles and had four quarterback sacks. He is committed to NCAA Division II Wayne State in Michigan. Young, a hybrid linebacker/defensive back, made 71 tackles and intercepted three passes. He will play for Harvard University next year. Perkins finished the season with a 14-2 record. "We played a really good team that executed to perfection," Santoro said. "There are some things you wish you would've done differently, but it was one of those games where whoever had the ball last was going to win. "The one thing I keep hearing is how great of a game that was. It was what a state championship game should be." Perkins started eight seniors on offense and seven on defense, so the graduation losses will be major. But Santoro says the Pirates' team goals will stay the same next year. "We lose a lot of productive players, but we've had a lot of young kids step up," he said. "Some guys have been waiting and they'll get a chance to showcase what they're about." Two players the Pirates faced in the playoffs — Ontario quarterback Bodpegn Miller and Indian Valley running back Grady Kinsey — shared Offensive Player of the Year honors. Both players were Mr. Football finalists. Miller will play at Ohio State while Kinsey, a junior, has an offer from Toledo. Defensive Player of the Year honors went to Cleveland Glenville junior linebacker Cincere Johnson and Cincinnati Taft defensive lineman Drayden Pavey. Johnson has multiple Division I offers, and Pavey is committed to Wisconsin. Four other players from the Sandusky Bay Conference earned spots on the Division IV team. For Clyde, offensive lineman Brady Dukeshire and defensive back Kam Shortridge were named to the second team. Receiver Brayden Olson was honorable mention. Vermilion punter Aaron Mathis was a second team choice, while linebacker Cohen Mooney was third team. Honorable mention choices included offensive lineman Chad Ellis and defensive lineman Beau Benesh. Vermilion head coach Bill DiFucci was one of three state Coach of the Year selections for Div. IV. DiFucci's first two teams finished 0-10 and 3-9 before the Sailors broke through this season with a 9-3 record and the school's first-ever playoff victory. It was Vermilion's first winning season since 2008.
