Duo dialed into Single Stitch

HURON — They rewind time to share their fashion-forward-first mindset with customers. Even though it's 2024, stepping foot in Single Stitch Vintage immediately feels like time travel, as the store evokes eras from yesteryear and farther back generations. "We sell vintage clothing from the 1980s, 1990s and early Y2K (year 2000) apparel," said Amelia Woodyard, who runs the clothing shop with her mom, Angie. The Norwalk residents recently opened their storefront at 613 Main St. in Huron across from Main Street Tavern. It's located within the same building as Corner Cuts. "I started selling vintage clothes, and the trend really took off," said Amelia, a 2016 Edison High School graduate who attended Ashland University and Marshall University. "It took off because vintage clothes are in." Along with Angie, the two began selling clothes at pop-up shops and area events, including the Milan Melon Festival and the Huron County Fair. In fact, it's at the fair that they met Teresa Brown, who owns Corner Cuts. "She and a couple of other people who work there bought our stuff and said how much they loved it and how cool would it be to open a shop," Amelia said. "She said she had the perfect place, and we love Huron because it's such a tight-knit community. It really worked out well." The storefront houses Single Stitch's entire inventory of attire and products. Whether for men or women, people can peruse through a wide selection of vibrant, comfy outerwear featuring professional sports teams, including pieces featuring Michael Jordan; well-known musicians; and more. It doesn't specialize in dresses or workwear, they said. "What we have here, it's one of a kind," said Angie, a 1991 Norwalk High School graduate who's always had a passion for fashion. Added Amelia: "Once you see something in here, you won't see it again. We handpick everything we have here. We spend hours at thrift shops and garage sales all over Ohio, carefully picking out what we offer. We are very specific in what we have." Right now, Single Stitch welcomes customers inside from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays. Hours should expand closer when springtime arrives. "What we have here is all quality, and you'll probably never find it again," said Amelia, noting the store takes donations and buys vintage items as well. What's in a name? Regarding the name Single Stitch Vintage, Amelia provided an explanation. "Anything that is vintage is made with a single stitch at the bottom. Today's clothes have a double stitch. If something is vintage, it will have a single stitch and usually of a heavier quality: Everything is super thick, and it's usually made in the USA."
