Edison moves up in Division V poll

Edison moved up two spots this week into a tie for the No. 2 ranking in Division V in the Associated Press football poll released Tuesday. The Chargers, who shut out Vermilion 17-0 last Friday, will take a 9-0 record into a Week 10 road game at Huron. Edison will try to finish the regular season with a perfect record for the first time since 1981, when current head coach Jim Hall was a freshman for the Chargers. "It's always one of the goals at the beginning of the year," he said. "We were 9-1 in 2015, 2016 and last year so this would be special." South Range received four first-place votes from a media panel and is No. 1 in Division V. Edison is tied with Liberty Center at No. 2. Those schools each received three first-place votes. Ironton is No. 4 and Oak Harbor is No. 5. Edison, Liberty Center and Oak Harbor all reside in Region 18. The Chargers are No. 1 in the region in the playoff computer rankings. Liberty Center is No. 2 and Oak Harbor is No. 3. Perkins remained No. 2 in the Division IV poll after a 37-0 win against Sandusky. Mentor Lake Catholic is No. 1 in D-IV. Cincinnati Wyoming is No. 3 and Shelby is No. 4. The Whippets are ranked No. 2 behind Perkins in Region 14. Shelby outscored Ontario 50-36 in Week 9 to clinch the school's 30th league football championship. Whippets quarterback Brayden DeVito threw for 322 yards, ran for 174 and accounted for seven touchdowns. Vermilion dropped out of the D-IV rankings after its loss to Edison. The Sailors were No. 15 last week. Monroeville remained at No. 5 in Division VII. The Eagles, who have shut out their last five opponents, host St. Paul on Friday in a huge Firelands Conference matchup. Monroeville is 6-0 in league play, but St. Paul (5-1) can grab a share of the FC title with a win. Mentor remains at No. 1 in Division I while Avon is No. 2 in D-II. Columbus Watterson tops the D-III poll. Coldwater is No. 1 in Division VI while Marion Local is No. 1 in D-VII. Those two state powers play Friday at Coldwater. Marion Local has won 57 straight games and can set a new Ohio all-time record with a win against the Cavaliers. Hopewell-Loudon, which can clinch the SBC River Division title with a win at Tiffin Calvert, is No. 3 in Division VI.
