Edison, Huron and Perkins move on

SANDUSKY — Edison, Huron and Perkins won Erie County's Academic Challenge. These districts are moving on to the championship in December. Academic Challenge is a scholastic competition for fifth- through eighth-grade students similar to the Firelands Challenge for high school students. Students in Sandusky, Erie, Huron and Ottawa counties compete in teams of four each competing and changing members at the end of each round. The topics are about math, social studies, science, geography, literature and miscellaneous. Sandusky and Huron County school districts completed their competitions earlier this month determining what districts are going on to the championship round. Erie County districts competed at the Sandusky Community Church of the Nazarene with the fifth and sixth grades competing on Wednesday and the seventh and eighth grades competing on Thursday. "Since many of these schools compete regularly in sports activities, it is another flavor to let them "show what they know" by answering Academic Challenge questions," Linda Stauffer, Coordinator of Academic Challenge, said. "Sportsmanship was clearly present and teamwork was on display. It was an all around good match for the Erie County schools." Stauffer said the Wednesday audience was enthusiastic while watching the students. The fifth grade had a spread of 13 points, and the sixth grade was separated by nine. On Thursday, the seventh-grade teams' points were separated by 15 points with first and second place only one point away. The eighth-grade teams were separated by 19 points. School districts within Ottawa County will gather at Oak Harbor High School on Oct. 22-23. All matches are set to start at 9:30 a.m. with different grades on different days.
