Monroeville scores record 71 points

NEW LONDON — The state-ranked Monroeville football team scored four times in the first 10 minutes en route to a 71-0 win over host New London in a Firelands Conference game Friday night at Recreation Park. The Eagles (6-0, 3-0) — ranked No. 7 in this week's Division VII Associated Press state poll — set a new program record for points scored in a single game. Leading 7-0, Monroeville's Colt Clark intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown. The second Landon Stein extra point put the Eagles up 14-0 at the 7:03 mark of the first quarter. Less than two minutes later, Landin Hershiser scored on a 20-yard run for a 22-0 lead at the 5:08 mark of the first. Landen Roeder then scored on a 40-yard run giving the Eagles four touchdowns in under 10 minutes and a 29-0 lead with 2:32 left in the opening quarter. On the first play of the second quarter, Roeder added a 39-yard run and Stein's kick made it 36-0. Evan Benfer then returned a punt for a touchdown to make it 44-0 at the 9:28 mark of the second quarter. Benfer then threw a 40-yard TD pass to AJ Bores at the 4:51 mark of the second, and Clark scored on a 10-yard run with 38 seconds left in the half to push Monroeville out to a 57-0 lead at the half. In the second half, Connor Bores scored on runs of 33 and 25 yards, respectively, to close out the scoring. Monroeville hosts Western Reserve (5-1, 3-0) in a key FC game next week at Marsh Field. Lakota 40, Willard 8 WILLARD — The Crimson Flashes never got things going in a 40-8 Sandusky Bay Conference River Division loss to Lakota on Friday. Lakota (2-4, 1-2 SBC River) led 7-0 after one quarter, 21-0 at halftime, and 24-8 after three quarters. The Raiders forced five turnovers defensively. Willard (2-4, 0-2) is at Division VI, No. 3 Hopewell-Loudon (6-0, 2-0) next Friday. Crestview 47, South Central 6 OLIVESBURG — The Trojans fell to 1-5 overall and 1-2 in the FC after the Cougars (2-4, 2-1) rolled to a win Friday night at Scott Bailey Field. The Trojans host Mapleton (2-4, 1-2) in another FC matchup next week. Mapleton 20, Plymouth 13 ORANGE TWP. — The Big Red trailed 20-0 midway through the third quarter, before a pair of touchdowns in the second half closed the gap in Friday's FC loss to the Mounties. Ethan Keefe scored on a 15-yard run on fourth down with 4:20 left in the third quarter for the Big Red (1-5, 0-3). Kaden Caughenbaugh then stripped and returned a fumble 55 yards for a TD with 4:38 left in the game, but Plymouth was unable to get the tying score. Keefe ran for 86 yards on 19 attempts for Plymouth, which hosts Crestview (2-4, 2-1) on Oct. 4 at Alumni Field.
