Suspected killer called 911

SANDUSKY — A man with a troubled history made a frantic 911 call late Thursday. O'Brien "I need to report ... I believe my girlfriend's daughter and dog have been taken," Devin O'Brien, 29, told a dispatcher. "I took a 30-minute nap, and I just woke up. Nowhere. I have searched our entire home." A graduate of Perkins High School, O'Brien lives in a mobile home park in the 4000 block of Venice Road (U.S. 6). He made the call at about 9 p.m. Thursday. He said he found things inside the trailer appeared to be out of place and also suggested to the dispatcher that a Cleveland man he described as a "deadbeat drug guy" might be responsible for taking the 3-year-old girl and the dog. But O'Brien, 29, was arrested and charged with one count of murder after police found the girl's body a short time later. O'Brien, in the 911 call, said he came home, and his girlfriend told him she had to go to work. He fell asleep, O'Brien told the dispatcher, and he wasn't sure how long he'd been sleeping when he woke up and could not find the child. "I'm thinking should I drive around and look. I don't know," he said. "They just moved in with me. There's a field near here." "Stay where you are right now. I need an officer to speak with you," the dispatcher tells O'Brien. The Lucas County Coroner's Office conducted an autopsy Friday morning. The child died of strangulation and also experienced blunt force trauma and sexual assault, according to Sandusky police Chief Jared Oliver. O'Brien attended Perkins High School. He held numerous different jobs over the years, according to family friends, who said he's had serious mental health challenges in the years since high school. O'Brien is being held at the Erie County Jail, without bond. He has an arraignment scheduled for 9 a.m. on Monday in Sandusky Municipal Court, according to jail records.
