PREP ROUNDUP: Clyde volleyball opens with 2 wins

NEW RIEGEL — Clyde opened its volleyball season with a pair of wins in a tri-match. The Fliers defeated host New Riegel 25-21, 25-18 before defeating Margaretta 25-11, 25-13. Against the hosts, Lauren Harrah had eight kills and Lily Ball added seven for Clyde. DeLani Durst finished with 17 assists and Miley Glass had 10 digs. Against the Polar Bears, Durst had 13 assists and five aces. Kelsey Ray added 10 assists and four digs and Miley Glass had nine digs. Lucy Glass added three aces. Kenadie Saylor had eight kills and Lily Belak added seven kills for Margaretta. "The girls played well," Clyde coach Shelley Rogers said "They are still trying to work out some kinks in the new line-up, but we are optimistic for the season. "The Glass sisters along with Mallory Eastby and DeLani Durst contributed with some great serving throughout the day. Brooklyn Hemminger and Annmarie Davis are doing a good job with their new positions in the middle at the net." Clyde travels to Mohawk on Tuesday before hosting Edison on Thursday. Margaretta dropped its second match, 25-16, 25-23 to New Riegel. Saylor and Raegan Heck each had four kills. Norwalk starts 2-0 NORWALK — Norwalk defeated Wellington 25-10, 25-15 and Western Reserve 18-25, 25-16, 25-16 to open the season 2-0. Lucy Schlotterer had 13 kills, 14 points and seven aces in the win over Western. Sydney Moehlman added 11 kills while Mac Wineman had 18 digs and eight points. Emily Tyler finished with 33 assists. Norwalk will visit SBC Bay Division foes Edison on Tuesday and state power Huron on Thursday. Oak Harbor 3, Port Clinton 0OAK HARBOR — Port Clinton dropped its opener to Oak Harbor, 25-15, 25-16, 25-21. Olivia Emerson led the Redskins with 15 kills. Maddy Cornell had 20 assists and Shianne Lieske finished with 18 digs. PC travels to Sandusky on Tuesday. Elyria 3, Vermilion 0 ELYRIA — Elyria swept Vermilion 25-17, 25-20, 26-24. Claire Bartlome had eight kills to lead the Sailors. Erin Ellis finished with 17 assists and Peyton Logsdon had 13 digs. Cali Wilson had five blocks for Vermilion. South Central 3, SMCC 0 GREENWICH — South Central swept freshman-heavy St. Mary Central Catholic 25-10, 25-7, 25-4 in the Panthers' opener. It was the debut of SMCC head coach Christine Lill. Lexington 3, Perkins 0 PERKINS TWP. — Perkins lost its season opener to Lexington in three sets., 26-24, 25-17, 25-14. Ferrell Coleman led the Pirates with 10 kills. Braelyn Davie had 15 assists and Olivia Hartung finished with 14 digs. The Pirates play Tuesday at Oak Harbor. GIRLS SOCCER Huron 2, Toledo Christian 1 HURON — Huron defeated Toledo Christian 2-1, scoring twice in the first half after falling behind 1-0. Freshman Lillian Thompson led the Tigers with two goals. Ava Manner assisted on the first goal. It was the first career win for first-year head coach Josh Thompson. The Tigers are off until next Wednesday when they travel to Mapleton. Port Clinton 1, Crestview 0 PORT CLINTON — Port Clinton's Alana Zibert scored off an assist from Emma Knecht in the second half for the only goal of the game. Abigail Johnson had nine saves in goal to earn the shutout. PC travels to Oak Harbor on Monday. Oberlin 3, Vermilion 1 OBERLIN — Vermilion dropped its season opener 3-1 to Oberlin. Freshman Morgan Frenk scored Vermilion's only goal on an assist from senior Summer Shirley. Abby Gawry had seven saves in goal. BOYS SOCCER Port Clinton 4, Crestview 2 PORT CLINTON — Noah Knecht scored two goals to lead Port Clinton to a 4-2 win over Crestview in its season opener. Knecht scored the opening goal off an assist form Connor Earnest. His second goal was unassisted. Cameron Grace scored PC's third goal off an assist from Ryan Madison. Bert Fall added an unassisted goal for the Redskins. Earnest had eight saves in goal. PC travels to Oak Harbor on Monday. Delta 5, Huron 0 HURON — Delta shut out Huron 5-0 after a scoreless first half. The Tigers host Clear Fork on Saturday. Firelands 3, Vermilion 2 OBERLIN — Firelands scored two late goals to turn back Vermilion, 3-2. Wesley Penton scored the Sailors' first goal before Zeke Dunn scored on a Penton assist to give Vermilion the lead. CROSS COUNTRY Huron runners lead local pack at OHSAA event OBETZ — Huron's Sage Edgerly-Bork finished fourth in 16:43.02 in the boys team 5K run in Divisions 2/3 at the at the OHSAA Early Season Invitational at Fortress Obetz. The Tigers' Jake Case finished 35th in 17:44.54 and Huron's Jason Nims was 47th in 18:04.50. Huron finished fourth in the team standings with 272 points, behind only Lexington, Maplewood and Van Wert. In the boys open 2-mile run, Edison's Gavin Mesenburg took 37th in 13:48.88. Huron's Rylie Towns finished sixth in 19:19.76 in the girls team 5K run in Divisions 2/3. Edison's Grace Anderson finished 28th in 21:09.26. Huron's Liz Heidl was 48th in 21:59.80. Huron finished ninth in the 37-team field. In the girls 5K open Division II/III run, Danbury's Emma Redett took fourth in 21:28.02. Edison's Juliana Johnson finished 16h in 15:44.10 in the girls 2-mile open . Monday's slate includes two big golf meets n The 18th annual Port Clinton Golf Classic will be held Monday at Catawba Island Golf Club. Seventeen boys teams are entered in the 9 a.m. shotgun start, including Bellevue, Clyde, Huron, Margaretta, Norwalk, St. Paul, Perkins, Port Clinton and Vermilion. Two-time defending champion Shaker Heights also will tee it up at one of area's top courses. Upper Sandusky senior Brock Montgomery also returns after shooting a 70 last year to win medalist honors. n The Perkins girls golf team will host the Plum Brook Invitational at Plum Brook Country Club starting at 12:30 p.m. Ten teams are entered, including Perkins, Margaretta, Clyde, Bellevue, Norwalk and Huron. n A full slate of boys and girls soccer includes Perkins hosting Lexington in a rematch of a 2023 girls sectional final won by Lex. In boys soccer, Port Clinton travels to Ottawa County rival Oak Harbor.
