Edison's Seville shoots 80, finishes runner-up at invite

HURON — Annabelle Seville knew she was closing in on a career-low golf round at Wednesday's Edison Invitational. The composed sophomore did not let the moment get too big for her. "I knew going into my last three holes," Seville said. "I was trying to not let it get to me and I think I held it together pretty good." Seville finished par-bogey-par to shoot an 8-over 80 to finish near the top of the leaderboard at Thunderbird South. Her previous best 18-hole score was an 81. Seville seemed to take things in stride, and responded to one last challenge after giving a post-match interview. As awards were being handed out, Seville was summoned to the No. 8 tee for a three-girl playoff for second place among individuals. She recorded a quick par to win the playoff and finish as runner-up to Fremont St. Joseph sophomore Ryan Dickman, who fired a 76. Seville began her round on hole No. 4 in the shotgun start and proceeded to put up 10 pars and eight bogeys on a very windy day. "I just clubbed up. That's what our coach told us to do," she said. "It was a lot of wind. Rather than hitting it harder, club up and use your same swing." Edison coach Shayne Fischer said the invite was a good steppingstone for Seville. "She's a very consistent player, doesn't have a lot of weaknesses," Fischer said. "We'll try to make her strengths a little stronger." Seville was the No. 4 player on Edison's senior-heavy 2023 team that qualified for the state tournament. The Chargers aren't as deep this year, but Seville still has big goals. "My goal is to make it (to state) as an individual, but I'm just hoping for more improvement," she said. Seville has improved thanks in part to working with a swing coach and playing a full summer schedule on the Northern Ohio Junior PGA Tour. "They play from farther back (on the tour), so coming into this it was a shorter distance," Seville said. "Teeing up farther back helps and I also got better with chipping and putting." Seville said she would like to shoot under par some day and wants to average in the 80s or low 90s this year. Seville, who also plays basketball for the Chargers, enjoys the atmosphere at golf meets. "The girls are so nice to me. It's a very positive environment," she said. "Last year the seniors helped bring a new perspective into it. Having a bunch of support makes me love the sport." She also has enjoyed working with first-year girls coach Fischer. "I'm thankful that he stepped up and believed in us and decided to coach our team," Seville said. Norwalk senior Kilee Duncan finished ninth overall with an 83, a career low for 18 holes. She started on No. 4 and had two birdies to go 1 under after five holes. "The wind was a little hard on me," Duncan said. "I had to adjust to that. I did my best." Duncan's previous career best was an 85 on the same course last year. She approaches the game of golf as a long play. "I can challenge myself and play golf forever," she said. "I have a lot of people in my family who are golfers." Huron senior Teagan Miller tied her career-best score with an 85. She shot 44 on the front before a strong 41 on the back. "There was a minute there when I couldn't take anything but bogeys, but I turned it on," Miller said. "The greens were a little fast. I had trouble at the beginning, but I got my rhythm. I wish I had a PR, but I'll take an 85." Miller shot an 85 last Friday at the Woodmore Invitational at Sugar Creek. "This course is tougher and longer than Woodmore, so I'm happy to know I can produce the same score on a harder course," she said. Medina Highland won the team title with a 330. Twenty-two schools were represented with 20 fielding full teams. Bellevue finished eighth with a 385 and was the top placer among area teams. Magdalynn Heuring led the Lady Red with an 88. Lauren Fleming added a 95, Ava Meyer had a 99 and Tessa Blankenship carded a 103. Clyde was 10th at 391. The Fliers were led by Samantha Young (93), Ella Howey (97), Sienna Turner (98) and Abbie Rogish (103). Perkins finished 11th at 399, led by Emily Terry (91) and Ireland Hart (95). Maycee Bohn (104) and Lucy Miller (109) also scored for the Pirates. Huron was 12th with a 404.
