'Conquering' the fair

Editor's note: Lyman Wilken serves as a news reporter for the County Conquerors 4-H Club. A part of the Erie County 4-H youth development network, the County Conquerors organization strives to make positive contributions to the community, including at the upcoming Erie County Fair. PERKINS TWP. — With the excitement of the upcoming fair, as the County Conquerors news reporter, I am sharing what it is like to be in a 4-H club. Our club is led by the president. Some of the other roles are vice president, treasurer, secretary, health, safety and recreation. Some of the things we do that make up our meetings are discussing fundraisers, playing games and presenting demonstrations. In addition, some of the club members like that the meetings help us prepare for the fair, and the meetings give us chances to meet and learn about each other. The meetings are very informative and we learn about health, safety, and much more. This is what a 4-H meeting looks like. At the meetings, we are reminded to uphold our 4-H pledge: I pledge my head to clearer thinking, my heart to greater loyalty, my hands to larger service, my health for better living, for my club, my community, my country and my world. The County Conquerors 4-H Club of Erie County was founded in 1948 and is still going strong today. When the club was first formed, it was only for girls — but with 30 members today, made up of a variety of kids, it is now a club for all.
