GOLF: Lakers place 2nd in opening tourney

NORTH BALTIMORE — Danbury's girls golfers opened their season with a team runner-up finish on Thursday at Birch Run Golf Club as part of the Royal Open. The Lakers put together a team score of 214 in the 9-hole competition, finishing behind event winner Otsego (193). Katelynne Bergman paced Danbury with a 46, which earned her individual third-place honors. Ashley Lewis was the fourth-best individual and gave Danbury its second score, a 48. Miranda Evans shot a 60 for the Lakers, and Brilynne Sloan rounded out the scoring with a 61. Danbury's Astrid Halblaub also competed and posted a 62. Friday's girls golf schedule Danbury will be joined by a handful of other area golf teams Friday at the Woodmore Invitational at Sugar Creek Golf Course. Perkins, Huron, Port Clinton and St. Mary Central Catholic are among the other teams entered. Upcoming boys golf action Friday will feature the first significant area boys golf action of the season when the SBC Bay Division holds its first shootout. The six Bay teams will descend upon Vermilion's home course, Willow Creek, to get league play underway. St. Mary Central Catholic's boys will also be in action Friday with a trip to the Chieftain Invitational at Fostoria Country Club. The season gets its unofficial opening bell Monday, when the Ralph Hohenstein Classic is held at Green Hills in Clyde, with the majority of local golfers in action.
