Alleged robber, shooter found dead in Florida

PERKINS TWP. — A man arrested for his alleged involvement in a September armed robbery was found dead in a Florida motel on Thursday. Kevin E. Matthews, 40, was arrested Sept. 2 after an armed robbery at a motorcycle dealership in the 5300 block of Milan Road (U.S. 250) in Perkins Township. Matthews and a man named Steven Davis, 36, were accused of murdering two men in the parking lot of The Pint House bar in Knoxville, Tennessee on July 2. Davis and Matthews purportedly began harassing a security guard at the bar when a fourth man stepped in and attempted to end the altercation, according to WVLT 8 in Tennessee. That's when Matthews allegedly pulled out a gun and shot the security guard and the man who attempted to break up the argument. The security guard died at the hospital while the other man was pronounced dead at the scene. Davis was found later that day, while Matthews eluded capture for another week. Matthews was tracked to a Jacksonville motel where he was in a room with a woman, according to David Jolley with the U.S. Marshals Service. Law enforcement got the woman out of the room. Matthews then reportedly shot himself and died at the scene. Perkins incident Matthews and two other men each attempted to start a motorcycle parked in the lot outside of the dealership. Two of the bikes started, and the men on them led police on a short pursuit that ended shortly after it started for safety concerns, according to Perkins police Sgt. Martin Curran. The bike Matthews attempted to take did not start so he reportedly ran from the dealership. While he was running, he reportedly dropped a gun. Curran said there was no indication the gun was brandished during the robbery attempt. Matthews was arrested and charged with aggravated robbery. His case had not gone before a grand jury yet. One of the other men allegedly involved in the incident was identified as Deven Fenter, 22, by Perkins police Detective Joseph Rotuno. Perkins police have warrants filed for Fenter who is serving a two-and-a-half year sentence in Marion Correctional Institution. He was convicted in Lucas County of one count of discharging a weapon near a prohibited area.
