Kastor brothers score aces 3 weeks apart

Dave Kastor recorded his first hole-in-one on June 10. His brother Ted matched the rare golfing feat on July 1. "He called me up all excited and said, 'It's running in the family,' " Dave Kastor said. The odds of the average golfer making a hole-in-one are 12,500 to 1, according to the National Hole-in-One Registry. Brothers making aces three weeks apart? Lottery ticket stuff. Dave Kastor, 67, got his ace on the 129-yard No. 7 hole at Mills Creek using a 9-iron. His witnesses were Dexter Alexander, Chuck Belan and Jason Ahlers. Ted Kastor, 72, aced the 118-yard No. 5 hole at Plum Brook Country Club using a hybrid club. His witnesses were Butch Allendorf, Jim Riedy and Cameron Prine. It was his second career hole-in-one. He got his first on that same hole in 2010. "My brother and I are average players. Holes-in-one are probably as much luck as skill," Ted Kastor said. "I was excited for him. Little did I know I'd get one a few weeks later. "I'm very close to my brother. We really enjoyed that and were thinking our dad would be proud of us." The Kastors' father was Wilson "Ted" Kastor, who played on the Sandusky High School golf team that finished sixth in the state in 1948. He also caddied at Plum Brook in the 1940s. Their great uncle Glendon "Ted" Kastor won the city championship at Mills Creek in 1933. Dave, who retired from the City of Sandusky and Franklin Sanitation, saw his ace hit the bottom of the cup. "It bounced and curved in the hole," he said. Dave says he plays three times a week year round. He spends winters in Florida. He was playing in a scramble with a group of retirees when he scored his 1 on a chilly Monday. "I bought Diet Cokes for most of the old guys and a beer for anyone who wanted one," he said. He tucked away the Callaway ball for safe keeping after his ace. "That ball was only played seven holes," Dave said. "I got the hole-in-one and put it away." The brothers, who both graduated from Sandusky High School, both used yellow golf balls. "That's what old people do now. It's easier to see," Dave said. "I buy good golf balls, but I use the yellow ones." Ted Kastor said he plays golf five or six times a week. He retired from Janotta and Herner but stays plenty active, serving on eight boards in the community and maintaining a construction consulting business. Ted played football and basketball at Sandusky High and was inducted into the school's athletic hall of fame as a member of the 1968-69 basketball team, which went 20-3 and was the last Sandusky team to win the rugged Buckeye Conference. "I got to play with a lot of talented guys," said Kastor, who played college basketball for BGSU Firelands. Ted's ace last Monday landed on the front left part of the green and worked its way to the back right pin. "I was able to watch the ball roll about 30 feet to the hole, which was fun," he said. "Obviously you're not expecting it. There was excitement, surprise." Plum Brook offers golfers who get a hole-in-one $100 in pro shop credit or a plaque. Ted Kastor's two plaques are featured in his basement man cave. He wisely bought hole-in-one "insurance" at the club, which covers drink costs after aces. "The guys that normally drink Bud Light drafts order a double Tito's martini," Ted said. Dave will do his best to match his brother with two career aces, but understands that one is quite rare. "Now I gotta hear about it again, when he says he has two," Dave joked. "Older brothers gotta try to one-up you."
