Senior center now offers transportation

SANDUSKY — The Erie County Health Department's Compass Point Senior Enrichment Center — 795 Bardshar Road, Sandusky — is now offering transportation services for participants. Compass Point provides adult day services for seniors and those with dementia or Alzheimer's diagnoses. The program has nurses on staff for medical oversight and offers a variety of exercise activities, cognitive games, healthy snacks and hot meals and fellowship. "Since we opened, we knew that transportation would play a significant part in the success of the facility," said Trey Hardy, the health department's assistant health commissioner. "We have worked hard over the past few months to achieve this goal and to provide services to elderly community members." Through a partnership with another local agency, Compass Point purchased two used vans and began providing transportation for program participants in June. Individuals who live within a 30-mile radius of Sandusky are eligible for transportation services. The health department and Compass Point work with a variety of insurance companies, and, as available, rides are charged to the insurance provider. For most individuals participating in Compass Point services, the passport waiver program through Erie County Job and Family Services covers transportation costs, however, each participant must apply to that program. Compass Point is now certified to deliver enhanced as well as intensive adult day services. This means that, in addition to the existing activities, Compass Point can now provide occupational, physical and speech therapies. Compass Point has also lengthened its hours of operation. Seniors can now attend Compass Point from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays. The program accepts passports, VA, long-term care insurance and private pay.
