Bus shelter coming to busy area

SANDUSKY — Sandusky Transit workers intend to add a bus shelter at a busy stop. During a recent public meeting, city officials announced a new covered structure set for the area at Buchanan and Camp streets. Crews should finish and debut the new shelter, not far from Sandusky High School's football stadium, later this summer. The shelter's cost totals about $10,300. Local officials intend to spend federal grant dollars previously acquired to fully cover this expense. James Stacey, the city's transit administrator, answered some additional questions: • The overall importance: "Our riders have given us feedback that they would like amenities at bus stops that protect them from weather elements and waiting environments that create accessibility to vehicles for passengers. Bus shelters offer several benefits to both commuters and the community including weather protection, safety and security, comfort, and accessibility." • The neighborhood improvements: "It supports the investment in the city of Sandusky's South Side plan and is one of the top three busiest stops on the Purple Line in terms of ridership." Note: On average, in each year since 2021, about 19,000 people ride the Purple Line. The South Side plan calls for many improvements along Sandusky's South Side neighborhood. • The continued trend: "Recently, new bus stops have been established at the justice center, at 222 Meigs St., and a bench with a trash can at 4 Points Bar at the corner of Milan Road and Sycamore Line (U.S. 250). All these have been funded through (a federal grant) program. Additionally, there is a collaboration with the Erie County Health Department to develop two transit waiting environments on Milan Road (U.S. 250) in Perkins Township. The specifics of these locations are still being finalized. These will be funded through (another grant)."
