Two aces on same hole in same league at Thunderbird South

HURON — Two golfers in the Cameo Pizza 18-hole senior league recorded holes-in-one on the same hole last week at Thunderbird Hills South. Robert Schurr from Port Clinton aced the No. 7 hole last Wednesday morning. The 83-year-old used a 9-iron to record his first hole-in-one. His witnesses were Paul Lee, Doug Tussing and Ned Koch. Scott McGookey from Put-in-Bay also aced No. 7. He used an 8-iron. It was McGookey's third career ace and his witnesses were John Rader, Mark Samaritoni and Eric Stewart. Before Schurr teed it up, another golfer had hit a tee shot within a couple feet of the pin and placed a marker at that spot in a closest-to-the-pin contest. "I saw it go around the marker and then it disappeared," Schurr said. "I didn't know where it was, but somebody said it went in." Schurr, a retired mechanic who operated a shop in Garfield Heights for 45 years, now lives in a cottage on Sandusky Bay. He enjoys golf and also participates in a league in Oak Harbor. Schurr didn't keep the ball from his memorable swing. "It's already in the woods somewhere," he said. "I have the card and Thunderbird South gave us a chip that says: 'Hole-in-one, No. 7, Thunderbird South.' "It was fun. After talking to people, it's more unusual than I thought. They're hard to get." Schurr's ace came before McGookey's hole-in-one. "When I went to mark my name on the placard (Schurr's) name was on there first," McGookey said. "I was just an also-ran." McGookey, 72, is a Sandusky High School graduate who splits his time between Put-in-Bay and Florida. His first ace came at Mills Creek when he was in high school. His second came at Thunderbird, but he said he couldn't see that one because he had cataracts. McGookey saw his third ace. It didn't take long for word to spread in the Cameo league. "The guys who finished ahead of me, I've gotten text messages saying I owe them a beer," he said. "I'm not off the hook." Other recent aces Bill Gassett from Huron recorded a hole-in-one on No. 2 on Thunderbird North on June 6. He used a hybrid 5 wood. Witnesses were Sam Printy, Beau Dent and Nick South. Another recent hole-in-one was recorded by Dave Kastor on June 10 at Mills Creek Golf Course in Sandusky. Kastor aced the No. 7 hole using a 9-iron. Witnesses were Dexter Alexander, Chuck Belan and Jason Ahlers.
