Raising a cone to ice cream shop

CATAWBA ISLAND — Those representing the Port Clinton Area Chamber of Commerce and Main Street Port Clinton recently hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Dockside Dairy at its stand on NW Catawba Road on Catawba Island not far from the Miller Ferry dock. Formerly Dairy at the Dock, Dockside is a seasonal shop running from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Hours are from noon to 9 p.m. Wednesdays through Mondays. The business uses local products, including Toft Dairy and Twin Oast Rootbeer. The organizations provided some history and context on this local landmark, which underwent an ownership change about a year ago, resulting in a ribbon-cutting celebration: The quick-food and ice cream shop started in the 1950s as Cook's Dairy bar ran by Coach Cook. Residents and visitors have fond memories of the shop and stop often to reminisce. The current owners Kari and Kip Krupp have a love of Port Clinton and Catawba Island. • Kari grew up spending her summers on Gem Beach. Her family also made homemade ice cream often in the warmer months for church socials and family gatherings. • Kip is a Port Clinton native where his family owned the Dairy Korner on Ohio 163 and Sand Road for many years. The building is no longer standing, but the homemade coney sauce is still served at Dockside Dairy.
