Walk this way in Vermilion

VERMILION — Many local officials and organizations came together to offer a new addition at a premier waterfront park. Earlier this month, representatives from these partnering agencies dedicated walking trails at Sherod Park, 13406 W. Lake Road, in Vermilion. Five loops make up what's known as The Dana Corogin Trail at Sherod Park. They're named after Dana Corogin, Vermilion's former park supervisor, whose time in city government is remember as someone who supervised many community initiatives to improve the quality of life for those living, doing business or spending time in Vermilion. Collectively totaling 1.1 miles, each loop — individually called Regatta Sculpture, Willow Walk, Par Course Fitness, East-West Connector and Belden Field — varies in length. They're as short as one-tenth of a mile and as long as four-tenths of a mile. While they weave in and around the park, these trails do connect and intersect with one another. They can also lead to a relatively new state-of-the-art playground, pavilions and a beach. Many agencies contributed to the $46,600 cost. This would include Vermilion's park board, the Erie County Health Department, Erie MetroParks and the Mylander Foundation. "The recreation trails at Sherod Park are just another feature in the remarkable rebirth of Vermilion's Sherod Park," Vermilion Mayor Jim Forthofer said. "From an unused grassy field, this park has become one of the two most used Vermilion parks along with Main Street Beach. Sherod adds to the livability of Vermilion and is a destination for kids and adults who just want good have good healthy fun." Making sense of the dollars and cents Building walking trails throughout Sherod Park totaled $46,600 broken down with: • $29,500 coming from the Erie County Health Department • $10,000 coming from the Mylander Foundation • $7,000 coming from Erie MetroParks • $100 coming from Vermilion's park board Many others — including Mark Haynes Construction, Cleveland Quarries and Vermilion's tree commission — made in-kind donations, which included the planting and maintenance of 60 new park shade trees Source: Vermilion parks and recreation department
