Wear orange for a reason

SANDUSKY — A localized version of a nationwide gun violence effort takes place this weekend. Starting today and through Sunday, the Wear Orange campaign asks community members to wear orange clothing. Why? To protest gun violence. The event coincides with National Gun Violence Awareness Day, which occurs annually on June 7. This protest comes a week after two people were shot in Sandusky on June 1. Earlier this week, members of the Center For Peace Through Understanding gathered at Talon Flohr Park in Sandusky to prepare for National Gun Violence Awareness Day and the Wear Orange campaign weekend. Those involved with the center raise awareness for many social causes, promoting equality among all people. The Wear Orange campaign began in 2015 after Hadiya Pendleton, a teenager, was shot and killed at a Chicago playground in 2013. "Orange is the color hunters wear to signal to other hunters not to shoot them," the campaign said. "So the color orange was selected to signal that wearers do not want to be the next victim of gun violence." Visit wearorange.org for more information.
